The first of our regular Millpond Farm sales at Jembaicumbene, comprising a  selection of 380 lots of privately consigned equine collectables, many without reserve. The sale was very successful with all the major carriages and smaller items sold. Strong interest was shown in the 1860s Barker double suspension Coach which sold for $34,500 inc. commissions, and the Eight Light Coach which sold for $17,825 inc. commissions. Bidders attended from Queensland, Victoria and South Australia as well as many far flung NSW centres, the weather held up well and fortunately the mud of the previous week had subsided to allow good access to our Mill and Wagon barn. The next carriage sale is intended for late 2011, and entries are invited. In the meantime several carriages are available in our showroom and will be listed on the website over the next few days.

IMPORTANT SALE NOTES:

PAYMENT TERMS: Payment is by cash or cheque with ID. Other terms by arrangement before the sale day.

Millpond Farm 2009
A spectacular 1860s Double Suspension Coach by Barker of London,
originally an open Landau, and later converted with a seven light superstructure to form a closed carriage. The vehicle is of impressive proportions and would suit a pair of large horses or a team. The beautifully shaped coachwork is original below the waistline; the upper closed section was added in the early 1960s in London so that the vehicle could be used in a four-in-hand club. This could easily be removed to recover the elegant open canoe landau shape. The coachwork is suspended on leather thoroughbraces on Cee springs, and the axles have further elliptic suspension, giving a truly memorable ride. A pole is provided. Estimate $30,000/35,000

The magnificent lamps displayed in the illustration were made for the Maharajah of Mysore and will be offered as a separate Lot, estimate $5,000/$8,000
There are forty vehicles in this auction and around 250 Lots of equine collectables.  Many items have just arrived so we strongly recommend that you make time to view the sale on Saturday or on Sunday morning. The Maddrell family Sefton Canoe Landau
ex "Braidwood Farm", Braidwood NSW

This important Edwardian canoe landau, circa 1903, uses a Sefton pattern and was the pride of the pioneering Maddrell family of "Braidwood Farm", a pivotal 1820s property in the Southern Tablelands which adjoins the historic Braidwood village. The Maddrell family and their relatives the Coghill's at nearby "Bedervale" competed for grand luxury accessories at the turn of the century and this magnificent canoe landau was so extravagent a purchase that the beautiful coach house behind it was built especially for its arrival in 1903.

When a motor car was acquired in 1907 the carriage was sold to Craig & Sons Undertakers in Goulburn where it served to the 1940s before being deposited in a gully from which it was recovered in 1962. It then spent time at Cooma and Moss Vale awaiting restoration, never started, although a new set of wheels have been sourced and are included. Languishing in storage ever since it awaits a sensitive hand and several months work to recover its former grandeur. This historically significant carriage requires major restoration but most parts are present and the finished carriage will be of great historical significance. Estimate $4,000/6,000
