We can provide valuations for a variety of purposes, including Cultural Gifts donations, Insurance, Family division and financial purposes.
Formal valuations comprise comprehensive written legal documents suitable for use in circumstances requiring an independent specialist opinion. They can be used for insurance, financial purposes, family division or probate and for donations under the Australian Government's Cultural Gifts Program, and are accepted by Courts of Law, the Australian Taxation Office and by institutions such as insurance companies in the case of a claim. Valuations must be reasonably current (within five years) and cannot be made retrospectively in the case of total loss of an object, except in exceptional circumstances.
In addition to our formal valuation service, online appraisals are available for various purposes at a modest fee. Online appraisals give a short, written opinion as to identification of an object, origin, date and estimated market value.
Our valuer, Antony Davies, is among the most qualified antiques and fine arts valuers in Australia with over 30 years international experience. Antony is approved to value for the Australian Commonwealth Government's Cultural Gifts Program in the categories of: Historic Vehicles, Australian Colonial Furniture, English & Continental Furniture, Decorative & Applied Art, Film & props, Horse Drawn Vehicles, and Silver.
Valuations for other purposes are available in all categories of the fine arts and collecting. Antony Davies is also the Official Valuer for the National Motor Museum of Australia, a position held for over 25 years.
Fees for valuations vary, but as a guide a formal written valuation will usually attract a fee of 2% of the value of the item or collection. No other charges are made for valuations completed by post or email. In certain circumstances where a personal visit is required travel expenses may be charged, at cost, in addition to the valuation fee. Our fees can be capped for items valued at over AUS$800,000 or where a fixed price is required. We recommend that valuations are reviewed at least every five years. Revisions of valuations completed by us are available at a discounted rate.
